Dot. The World's smallest stop-motion character shot on a Nokia N8

Dot. The World's smallest stop-motion animation character shot on a Nokia N8 from doreymccall on Vimeo.

Professor Fletcher's invention of the CellScope, which is a Nokia device with a microscope attachment, was the inspiration for a teeny-tiny film created by Sumo Science at Aardman. It stars a 9mm girl called Dot as she struggles through a microscopic world. All the minuscule detail was shot using CellScope technology and a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics.

10 BEST XLR8R PODCASTS 2010

This year's podcast section blew up like never before, and it's a testament to the power of the DJ, we suppose, who brings all the fanfare and flourishes of a hot night out to the banal locale of our desktop. Out of the 50+ mixes that premiered on our website over the year, the 10 below are not only the best executed, most unique, and wholly memorable (even controversial at times), but also the sets we personally keep returning to when in need of a solid DJ mix. Enjoy.

No sabemos".

      Fader x FANIA!!!!

As previously announced, The FADER is embarking on a yearlong remix project with the legendary Latin label Fania, wherein we enlist some of our favorite musicians to reinterpret classics from their celebrated catalog. Today, we’re thrilled to premiere the first in the series, for which Monterrey-based DJ/producer Toy Selectah has envisioned Willie Colón’s haunting salsa classic “Aguanile” as a portal to the future of the sacred 6/8 rhythm. Voiced by hallowed singer Hector Lavoe, the song feels like a stepladder from the ancient rhythmic past to the very immediate present, manifested in the new Mexican style called tribal guarachero. Read our interview with Toy about his interpretation of this song in the following pages, and read more about him in our tribal guarachero story in our latest issue. You can buy this remix offFania’s site, purchase it on vinyl EP in the coming months, or grab the whole 12-song series on vinyl and CD at the end of the year.

For the second installment of our yearlong remix collaboration with Fania, the classic Latin label, we enlisted the awesome London-via-Medellin producer/DJ/vocalist Isa GT, whose unending wellspring of energy is second only to her deftness with a synth rack and a dancefloor, often jolting traditional Colombian and afro-caribbean styles with neon electro zap, a 21st Century party-people take on the populist jams of Latin America. And as a founding member of London’s Girlcore Collective, Isa has supported the work of enterprising women, put together notoriously off-the-chain parties and toured the world, with her latest release being the Pa’Kichirri EP on Man Recordings. For this project, Isa remixed Ismael Rivera’s black pride anthem “Las Caras Lindas” into a minimal-maximal masterpiece, injecting a tiny but electrified synth melody and club-uniting handclaps under his powerful vocals. Listen to the track and read our interview with Isa after the jump, then head over to Beatport to purchase the MP3. Stay tuned for more awesome remixes from Fania x The FADER!

For the third installment of The FADER’s remix project with the legendary Latin label Fania––in which we enlist some of our favorite musicians to reinterpret classics from their celebrated catalog––Brooklyn’s scuffed beauties Twin Shadow plucked a flagship track by Bronx salsa trailblazer Ray Barretto for a full-bore Chicago house seance. One of the best things about this remix is that Twin Shadow’s leader, George Lewis, Jr., is not explicitly a classic dance music producer––even with his mastery of machine beats, his amazing debut album’s more about black nubuck, bedroom-isolated new wave guitars and secret emotions plumbed from the diaphragm. But he knew Barretto was a drummer who stayed posted behind the congas, so Lewis beelined for the piano parts, punctuating “Acid”’s intense syncopation with psyched trumpets and ghost vocals. Unexpected remix but in retrospect it totally makes sense, since dude’s a medium with drum machines. It’s Midwest-to-borough utopia as dictated by maybe 1989. Also, prescient of this exact moment. Read our interview with Lewis about his remix after the jump, and grab it off Fania’s site.

Dreams Deferred at Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles

      dreamART_eribertoOriol

The Chinese American Museum and El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument have teamed together to present Dreams Deferred : Artists Respond to Immigration Reform opening this Thursday night, December 9th, in Los Angeles with a special opening reception. Artist in Dreams Deferred include Shepard Fairey, Kofie, Slick, Patrick Martinez, Eriberto Oriol (above), Swank, SharkToof, Eyeone, Ernesto Yerena, and others.

The show runs through May 22, 2011, but one should check it out this weekend.

We want the message to be as clear as possible, so read the press below:

This exhibition will showcase local artists exploring the tensions, repercussions, hopes, and dreams of immigrant communities in the face of new immigration legislation, through a broad spectrum of art including street art, graffiti art, sculptures, painting and multimedia installations.

U.S. immigration laws have long reflected a lasting legacy of racial exclusion starting with the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, the first legislation to restrict immigration based on race and ethnicity. This legacy of immigration legislation targeting immigrant communities has since reemerged in the recent decades with California's Proposition 187,and Arizona's Senate Bill 1070, as attempts at inhibiting the livelihoods of undocumented immigrants.

Dreams Deferred continues the current national dialogue about immigration, kicked-off by the recent opening of CAM's Remembering Angel Island, an exhibition commemorating the 100th year anniversary of the opening of the West Coast's first immigration station. Both exhibitions will serve to shed light on the parallels of past and current immigration policies and reform, and how Los Angeles' diverse immigrant communities collectively share not only their immigrant histories, but also many of the challenges facing new immigrant communities today.

      "A Tribe Called Quest"

The film, "Beats, Rhymes & amp; Life,”
was directed by actor Mike Rappaport,
and I don't know anything about release dates,
      but this will be interesting.
